Sustainability
People and Communities
People are at the heart of everything we do.
Our people
We take pride in the 285,000 men and women who together make up DHL. We support the people we employ with a broad range of initiatives - based on business needs - including:
- Employee training and development programmes
- Equal opportunity programmes
- General health promotion campaigns
- Occupational health and safety programmes
- Mentoring programmes for female executives
- Work/life balance programmes
- Idea management programmes which reward employee innovation
- Opportunities to volunteer in community investment projects
Community investment
A key way in which we accept our social responsibilities - a commitment included in our
Corporate Values - is through our community investment programme and, in particular, the many projects and initiatives which we support.
Our community investment programmes and the voluntary efforts of thousands of our employees, together with
our partners, help to build stronger communities.

The DHL Disaster Response Teams provide air cargo management and warehousing services at airports close to disaster-hit areas.
Our community investment programme is built around three main areas:
Disaster Management:
- At the global level, we use our core competencies to assist the UN System - our strategic partner - and the international community to deliver help. Together with OCHA we are setting up a global network of DHL Disaster Response Teams (DRT). The DRTs provide air cargo and warehousing services at airports close to the scene of major sudden-onset natural disasters
- Our Disaster Management programme also encompasses additional disaster preparedness, disaster response and post disaster reconstruction initiatives at both the global and local level
Future Generations:
- At the global level, we have entered into a strategic partnership with UNICEF. The goal of the partnership is to provide UNICEF with long-term assistance in its worldwide fight to reduce child mortality. We will support UNICEF in a variety of ways including: providing our core competence in logistics as an in-kind donation, implementing a global donation programme, and enabling employee volunteers to support health and education initiatives in the field.
- Our Future Generations programme helps to build strong communities by supporting projects at the global and local level which improve the health and educational opportunities of children and young adults. It also supports initiatives which improve the quality of the environment. A healthy and educated population, together with a thriving natural environment, are basic prerequisites for communities which wish to trade and prosper
Supporting Entrepreneurs:
- We support micro business, social entrepreneurs and Fair Trade at the local level. These initiatives help support smaller-scale endeavours, and help them to prosper through increased trade and improved business skills
- In Asia Pacific, DHL is identifying and rewarding the contributions of young social entrepreneurs through the
DHL YES Awards
The DHL YES Awards will help young social entrepreneurs realize the UN Millennium Development Goals - many of which aim to improve the lives of children and young adults in developing countries.
Most of our community investment projects support the realisation of the
UN's Millennium Development Goals and underscore our growing partnership with the UN System.
