Number of pages
Total number of pages the printed piece will have. Note that 1 sheet of paper will yield 2 pages (front and back). If your cover is printed on a different paper stock than the inside pages, please specify it separately. (Eg. enter "8+4" or "8+cover" for a 8-page brochure with a 4-page cover)Number of sheets
Total number of sheets the printed piece will have. Note that 1 sheet of paper will yield 2 pages (front and back).Bleed
Text or art that extends beyond the trim page boundaries, or the crop marks. Part of a printed image that extends beyond the page boundary. When the page is trimmed to size, the "bleed" extends to the absolute edge of the paper, preventing any show-through of the paper colour.Folding

- Gatefold
- Trifold
- V Fold
- Wraparound fold
- Accordian Fold / Z Fold
- Gate Fold
- Double Parallel
A Letterfold is made with 2 parallel folds folded toward the same side. Usually used to fold a Letter-sized sheet to fit into a #10 envelope. An Accordian/Z-fold is a zig-zag fold.
Perforate
- Single
- Double
- Triple
Cutting a row of fine slits into a sheet to enable a section to be torn off easily. Eg. on a ticket stub, reply slip etc.
Foil Stamping
- One
- Two
Foil stamping is a process using a combination of heat and pressure to bond a foil to paper.
Embossing
- Single
- Double
Stamping an area or image into paper with metal dies to achieve a raised surface, usually combined with a printed image.
Debossing
Debossing is the term used to describe the opposite process or effect, which involves applying pressure to the front side of a stock forcing the material away or down from the paper surface. Although it is not as commonly used as embossing, debossing is occasionally used to provide a different effect or appearance that fits a particular theme.Varnish

UV Coating
UV coating is a clear liquid spread over the paper like ink and then cured instantly with ultraviolet light. It can be a gloss or matte coating, and can be used as a spot covering to accent a particular image on the sheet or as an overall (flood) coating. UV coating gives more protection and sheen than either varnish or an aqueous coating. Since it is cured with light and not heat, no solvents enter the atmosphere. However, it is more difficult to recycle than the other coatings.UV coating is applied as a separate finishing operation as a flood coating or (applied by screen printing) as a spot coating. Keep in mind that this thick coating may crack when scored or folded.
Lamination
A plastic film bonded by heat and pressure to a printed sheet for protection or appearance.Die-cutting
The process of using sharp steel rules to cut special shapes for labels, boxes and containers etc, from printed sheets.Laser Engraving
A second method of die-cutting, which has been developed in recent years, is called laser engraving. By using a computer-controlled beam of light to cut through the material, text and images can be accurately reproduced on a variety of paper stocks. By using a laser, manufacturers can provide an exceptionally high quality, well-detailed and fine-lined reproduction of intricate art and images or corporate logos. The laser can create die-cuts that have cut away areas which are very small in size, unlike a rotary or flat bed die-cut which encounters difficulty in having a die made for small cut areas and further, has difficulty in stripping away the paper from the small cut out areas. A laser engraved die-cut can be created to reproduce a 800 dpi (dots per inch) image allowing for a cut impression with a significant amount of clarity and definition.

Saddle stitch binding
Pages are printed as double-page spreads. After the spreads are collated, staples are forced through the backbone or spine of the booklet.Perfect binding
Widely used for paperback books. Pages are held together by a flexible adhesive with the cover glued into place. Perfect bound books cannot be opened completely flat.Spiral binding
Sheets are punched with a series of round or slotted holes along the binding edge. A plastic coil is then inserted through the holes.Wire-O binding
Similar to Spiral binding except that a wire is used instead of a plastic coil. Wire-O is sturdier and provides a more professional finish.Cerlox binding
Similar to Spiral binding except that unbinding to add or delete pages is possible.Thermal binding
Similar to Perfect binding except instead of a wraparound cover, a black tape is used to wrap around spine and the first and last sheet. The subsequent application of heat fuses the pages together. Thermal binding is an on-line feature on the Docutech.Corner staple binding
A single staple is punched into a corner of a collated set of sheets.Side stitch binding
Staples go through the top of the first sheet along the side close to the back edge. Side stitched books cannot be opened completely flat.Padding
Sheets are glued on one edge (usually with a cardboard backing) for easy detachment. Notepads, prescription pads etc. are often padded.File Format
